Animal Care Centre
The state of the art Animal Centre here at Otley Campus was opened by Anthony Tropeano, the Director at Colchester Zoo, on the 13th March 2014.
It boasts three ‘Small Mammal’ rooms housing a variety of companion animal species such as Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Rats, Hamsters and Ferrets. These rooms also house some more unusual species such as Skunks, Jirds, Duprasi and Multimammates!
Our two ‘Exotic’ rooms house a range of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates from around the world including Brazilian Rainbow Boa, African Giant Millipedes, Chuckwallas and Hermit Crabs.
The ‘Nocturnal’ room (with reverse lighting), houses African Pygmy Hedgehogs, Sugar Gliders, Chinchilla and a range of nocturnal rodents.
The ‘Aquatics’ room is home to a diverse range of ecosystems, from temperate to tropical and doesn’t just contain fish! We also have a pair of Axolotl and a Mississippi Map Turtle.
The students also have access to the ‘Isolation/Treatment Room’ where they will be able to undertake health checks, provide medication (if required) and weigh the animals.
A fully equipped ‘Grooming Parlour’ is located towards the rear of the Centre which offers a range of services to the public. Our staff kennel facilities also provide learners with the opportunity to work with a range of different dog breeds.
The front of the Centre houses our student led Pet Shop ‘Yum Yums’, an enterprise open to the public that stocks a variety of pet foods, toys and treats.
As part of the on-going development of the College, our animal collection is due to expand even further in the near future, focusing more on zoo and wildlife species. So watch this space!
